Hello, I’m Kaylah! I graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) with a B.S. in Psychology and minors in Art History and African American Studies. I also completed pre-medical post-baccalaureate coursework at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). During this time, I took organic chemistry and realized how much I enjoyed learning the content my professors were presenting. After completing Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II, I began working as a chemistry tutor at UNCG.
I have three years of professional tutoring experience with UNCG, and I worked as a volunteer elementary and middle school math tutor for about six years prior to beginning professional tutoring. During the last nine years, I have worked with students from various backgrounds and age groups. These experiences have helped me develop creative ways to present information to students based on their grade level and age. I strive to make tutoring sessions relevant, fun, and exciting, because I feel students work best when they enjoy the process of learning the material.
When working with students, I like to introduce the topic/concept at the beginning of the session and allow them to share any information they know about that session's topic. During this time, I also ask my students to make a list of concepts or specific problems they are struggling to understand. At that point, I am able to determine if we need to do a full overview of the topic or if we can have a brief overview and begin working through practice problems. Each student is different, so I adjust this method during each session to accommodate the student. I also like to take 2 minutes or less to develop a session goal for each tutoring session. I really enjoy helping students accomplish those goals, and it is one of the most rewarding aspects of tutoring!
Please reach out to me if you have questions or if you are interested in scheduling a tutoring session! Happy learning!
