About Katie Jo

I specialize in tutoring physics, mathematics, and astronomy. I can also tutor French, English, psychology, chemistry, and standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, GRE). In addition to tutoring, I can teach hatha, prenatal, restorative, and yin yoga as well as beginning piano lessons.

I graduated from the University of Chicago with a master’s degree in physics as all but dissertation and a second master's degree in astronomy & astrophysics. An Indiana native, I graduated with highest distinction and Phi Beta Kappa from Purdue University, where I double majored in honors physics and mathematics with a minor in psychology. I also took five quarters of collegiate French classes and eleven years of piano lessons plus three years of jazz band. I completed my RYT 200 Hatha Yoga Teacher Training at Fire Horse Yoga, Massage & Wellness in Jasper, IN, my Yin Yoga Teacher Training at Tree House in Indianapolis, and I am currently finishing up my RYPT Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training at Sweet Momma Yoga in Bloomfield Hills. I taught a Friday morning guided imagery meditation class for two years as part of the Twenty Minutes Still series at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. Before moving to Michigan in August of 2018, I taught yin yoga and goat yoga at Studio You Yoga in Greenwood, IN.

This past academic year, I taught as mathematics, science, and French instructor at Brightmont Academy. I taught AP Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Introductory Algebra, Earth Space Science, and French. I worked with middle school and high school students, who have ADHD, anxiety, autism, and athletic travel conflicts in a one-on-one instruction format with a mastery-based learning approach using the Apex Learning software. I accommodated my individual students’ interests and learning styles with empathy, patience, and creativity. Prior to that, I taught physics as an associate adjunct professor at the University of Indianapolis for two years. For the last three years, I have also taught online astronomy as an adjunct professor at Ivy Tech Community College.

In graduate school, I led discussion and lab sections for courses which have run the gamut from introductory physics and astronomy sequences to mathematical methods and mechanics courses to special topics courses on black holes and gravitational waves. During office hours, I worked one-on-one with myriad students to clarify conceptual questions and to hone problem-solving strategies. As a teaching assistant, I received stellar student evaluations. In the spring of 2013, I was nominated by my students for the Physical Sciences Division Teaching Prize. I also received the Robert A. Millikan Fellowship for Teaching and Research for the 2013-2014 academic year and again in the summer of 2015.

As someone with over ten years of teaching and tutoring experience, I have impeccable grammar, and I am a meticulous proofreader. Effective communication has been of paramount importance in my career. I have worked with numerous students over the past several years in physics, calculus, geometry, algebra, and standardized test prep including the SAT, ACT, and GRE. I am currently tutoring two Japanese elementary students in English as a second language. Last summer, I tutored a profoundly gifted, homeschooled elementary student with ADHD in pre-algebra and a traditional high school student in physics. Two summers ago, I tutored a deaf student in trigonometry and college algebra through the Academic Support Center at Vincennes University Jasper Campus. I also tutored underrepresented students in the sciences through the Women in Science Program at Purdue University from 2009 to 2011 and the College Core Tutor Program at the University of Chicago from 2013 to 2014.
