In the 2019-2020 school year I worked in a fifth grade English and Language Arts classroom, helping out in the classroom and having one on one tutoring sessions with a small group of students. We would work on grammar, pronunciation, reading out loud, and thinking critically about what we were reading. I would also help with their homework if they needed me to.
During my time at City Year, I learned that tutoring is more than just information passing from one person to the next. It is about listening to the student about what they need help with and what makes sense to them, and figuring out how to use that information to best help them. The best way to do this is to remember that children are people, and they need to be treated with the same respect and consideration as any adult.
