Qualifications & Experience

I have a math degree, so if you're having a tough time, I'll be able to help. More importantly, I love working with students of all ages! I've worked with K-12, college, and professional students for over 10 years, but have also been in the business world for a few years so I have plenty of examples of using math in the real world.

It's important to me that people feel comfortable with math; there's no such thing as a student who "doesn't get math," just students who haven't yet been shown a way that works for them.

In addition to math, I'm also great with editing papers, rules of writing, and grammar.

ALGEBRA!!! Scary, especially if you are bad at math. Joe and I had our first meeting a week before my midterm and I was freaking out. Day one, I told Joe I was bad at math and he said "Nobody's bad at math, they just haven't learned to look at it in a way that makes sense!" Not sure if I believe him, but it made me feel a lot better and I won't forget that. That first test didn't go so well, so I brought it to Joe and we worked through everything...it was a lot easier to digest everything when it wasn't right before a test. Long story short, after meeting with Joe a few times, I actually feel ok about algebra. I passed the class and never have to take math again! For real though, Joe is great. He doesn't make you feel stupid when you don't get something and will explain it as much as you need it. He even helped me with one of my papers that he helped edit and I got an A on it (BONUS!). I absolutely recommend Joe.

Joe was my tutor in college while I was a student athlete and probably THE reason I passed my calculus class. No lie, he had a way of making calc so simple that it was easier than the algebra I really needed to make up. Once he pinpointed what I needed to improve on, he found some problems for me to practice online and also helped me make flashcards. It's pretty tough to pass calc without algebra, but I was able to squeak by with a C, which I was just fine with. Joe is a great tutor and can help you pass your classes, you just need to put the time in.

I set up a group tutoring session with Joe and a few of my classmates in pre-calc so we could afford to meet with him a few different times. The first time was a little jumbled since there were 5 of us, but toward the end of it we got into a rhythm. I was surprised at how well he could work with all of us at the same time, even though we all had different questions. After that first session, he told us to make sure we came to the next one with specific questions, and that made a huge difference. We met a total of 4 times throughout the semester and even though Joe wasn't there with us during the test, the way he tutors helped us out a lot. Plus, we had really good homework scores. Oh, if you have homework or tests that are graded, he will go through them with you and help you see where you went wrong. Definitely go with Joe, he's the best.

As a single mom, I was very nervous to go back to school and get my GED. My biggest fear? Math! And I mean I had not even taken high school math, I was way behind. I finally got up the courage to sign up for GED classes, and Joe was there for me all the way. He is so patient and kind when he walks you through the steps to solve a problem, and also flexible with when and where you meet (we would sometimes meet at Starbucks, sometimes my house, sometimes school). No matter where we met though, he always showed up on time or let me know if he was running late. He also became my biggest cheerleader as the test got closer and closer. Anyways, after passing my GED, I kept Joe as my tutor while working through Nursing school! The best part about him is that he sort of helps you find the answers and learn on your own, so as time went on we needed to meet less and less. I just graduated and am now an RN, in large thanks to Joe :)
