Hello! My name is Johanna and I have a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona. I have a broad conceptual understanding of mathematics at an advanced level and strive to convey my love for math onto my students. My goal is to help you succeed in mastering the material. I have experience tutoring students that are struggling/falling behind and students that need a refresher course/exam prep. My ultimate goal in providing math tutoring sessions is for the student to master the material. I believe that in order to achieve that goal the following 3 steps must be completed: Step 1. Build A Strong Foundation. Most students struggle with math classes due to having a weak understanding of basic mathematical concepts. As a tutor I help students build that strong foundation by first presenting concepts in a simple manner so as to avoid confusion and build confidence. Once the student is comfortable and has mastered the basic concepts then the level of difficulty is increased accordingly. Step 2. Develop a Problem Solving Mentality. I believe in teaching students different methods for how to approach math problems in order for them to develop a problem solving mentality. Students tend to give up on attempting a problem if from the start they do not know how to solve it exactly. Having a problem solving mentality is key as it changes the tendency of students to give up right away and instead gives students a starting point in knowing various ways to approach the problem. Step 3. Practice. This is necessary as repetition of applying mathematical concepts will result in the student learning and ultimately mastering the material. Practice increases confidence when approaching problems and helps them develop a problem solving mentality. As a tutor I guide students through each of these steps for them to master the material.
