I have a Bachelor's degree in Classics (specializing in Ancient Greek language) from Villanova University. My last year there, I was a part-time tutor of Math and English for underprivileged primary school students.
After that, I went to Greece on scholarship for a year to learn the Modern Greek language. The experience of using my limited Greek vocabulary to speak with Greeks, and of speaking English to non-native English speakers, often required me to find different ways to communicate the same thing, a skill that is important for teaching. I took that skill with me when I became an assistant teacher for philosophy at Kansas University in 2015.
I believe in providing tutoring sessions in which we first cover the important concepts before doing any 'steps' or procedures. This ensures that my students come to understand the material, rather than simply memorize steps or terms.
