Qualifications & Experience

I also have a strong desire and love for working with students.

I want to make a positive, lasting impact on elementary, middle, and high school students. I am interested in helping students navigate the educational system. I am enthusiastic, motivated, and highly qualified to take on an important role in your students’ lives.

I also speak three dialects of Chinese: Mandarin, Cantonese, and Teo-Chew, as well as conversational Spanish.

I have complete fluency with the college/graduate application and admissions process, if this is ever an area of need.

I am an experienced and skilled tutor with over 10 years of experience. I am patient and find passion in helping students K-12 learn various subjects, including Math, Science, English Language Arts, and History. I have helped many students achieve academic success and improved test scores. I have also mentored and guided them through the college and admissions process to very prestigious universities.

I have been a straight "A" for most of my academic career, and am very passionate about helping students learn effective educational strategies.

In my private tutoring service, I have been tutoring students in the following subjects:
-ACT English, Reading, Math, and Science
-SAT I Reading, Writing and Language Tests
-SAT II Subject Tests in: Math Level 1, English Literature, U.S. History, and World History
-AP English Literature and Composition
-AP European History, U.S. History, World History
-AP U.S. Government and Politics
I have taken many of these tests in high school and achieved very high scores myself. Consequently, I know what it takes for students to thrive in high school and in college.

I took AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition in high school, and scored 4's in both tests. I am very knowledgeable about the English language, including punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, and more. I am also very knowledgeable in English Literature, including literary analysis, literary terms, and complex concepts. I am very experienced in tutoring reading comprehension, vocabulary building, and all English-related topics. I have 5 years of experience tutoring for the ACT English and Reading, SAT I Reading, SAT I Writing and Language, and SAT II English Literature Tests. All of my students have achieved better grades and higher scores. I took English classes at UCLA, and earned high grades.

I took AP Calculus AB in high school and earned a 5 on the AP Test. I am very knowledgeable in Elementary Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and I am very experienced in tutoring these subjects for ACT Math, SAT I Math, and SAT II Math Level 2. All my students see an improvement in grades and scores.

I took World History Honors and AP U.S. History in high school, received “A’s” in both classes, and scored a 4 on the AP Test. I am very experienced in tutoring SAT II World History and U.S. History subjects. Similarly, all of my students have improved their grades and scores. I took Political Science courses at UCLA, and also earned high grades.

I review, edit, proofread, and revise students' writing for the ACT and SAT I & II writing components, and school writing assignments. I teach students how to improve their writing skills.

I also coach students on how to tell effective and engaging stories in their college admission essays. This is another service I provide, if it is what you are looking for as well. I had extensive writing experience in college at UCLA, where I completed five years worth of research papers. I am also a professional editor, journalist, and writer. I could apply my experience writing for several reputable journalism publications, such as, KPCC (NPR affiliate), and KCETLink (public television station and news site).

I was an English Language Arts, Math, and Science tutor with A Tree of Knowledge's Supplemental Education Services (SES) Program. I used Student Learning Plans (SLPs) to guide each student’s achievement goals. I also wrote Daily Progress Reports (DPRs) track each student's progress. All of my students saw a significant improvement in grades and scores.

Therefore, I am very familiar with all types of academic tutoring and mentoring.

At A Tree of Knowledge Tutoring Services, I tutored students with various learning disabilities and special needs. I also had experience working with students who have IEPs. I made sure to be very sensitive, patient, and aware of the student's needs. I am very caring to all my students.

I treat all my parents and students with the utmost respect and sensitivity—I also maintain constant and open communication with them.

I studied abroad in Hong Kong and Spain, and am culturally sensitive to parents and children. Many of my students are international students from various foreign countries, so I have helped guide them in their transition into education in America.

I graduated with Cum Laude Honors from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. I was also repeatedly on the UCLA Dean's Honors List many times. At the time of graduation, I earned a 3.748. My UCLA Transcript and Diploma are available upon request.

Let me tell you about my background and how that inspired me to become a tutor. I came from a low-socioeconomic status family, and my parents did not speak any English. We could not afford any tutoring services, but I know how valuable this service could be. I had to learn everything by myself. I worked very hard to study for the AP and SAT I & II Subject Tests on my own by borrowing books from the library. I learned how to learn. Now, I want to give back and teach other students effective ways to study and achieve academic success.

I had to research and apply for college applications, figure out how to pay for and take my AP, SAT I & II Tests on my own, and then in turn, translate the entire process to my parents from English to Chinese.

I received a full scholarship to UCLA, and also in turn, translated the entire process of financing my own education to my parents.

I began tutoring other students at a very young age. In 8th Grade, I was a peer tutor, in which I tutored struggling students in from 3rd to 7th Grade. In high school, I was also in a peer program called Horizons Tutoring, in which I was an English Language/Literature, Math, and History tutor for my peers.

I know the struggle of how difficult it can be for a student. Between figuring out which college to attend and apply to, studying for AP, ACT, SAT I & II Tests, and maintaining good grades, it could be a lot to handle. Therefore, I want to give students the tools to soar academically, achieve their educational dreams, and attend the colleges of their choice. There is nothing more rewarding for me than seeing my students succeed and their self-confidence rise. I also feel a great sense of pride when the parents are able to see the fruit of their labor as their children enter higher education.

Other special skills that I can provide tutoring in are Adobe Photoshop for photo editing, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid, Final Cut Pro for video editing, Adobe Audition and ProTools for audio editing, as well as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.

I also tutor adults who want to improve their English, as well as for the TOEFL test. Many of them have newly immigrated to America, and are still adjusting to the language and culture. We work on grammar, reading, writing, speaking/conversation, listening, cultural idioms, and more.

I believe I am uniquely qualified to tutor you or your children. I welcome adults and children as my students. I would contribute my encouraging and positive energy, skills, and many years of education experience and in-depth knowledge.

I also have reliable transportable, a flexible schedule, and a very patient personality!

Thank you! Look forward to working with you!
